If you’re keeping track of Oprah these days, stick a pushpin in Haiti.
Newspapers in Port-au-Prince yesterday were buzzing with the news that the talk-show queen is due there on Saturday.
She is apparently going to interview actor Sean Penn there for her new series called “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” set to debut next month.
Local officials are hoping exposure on the new show will help bring tourists back to the island.
“We want to ensure that Ms. Winfrey shows beautiful images of Haiti, not just the camps,” Haiti’s minister of foreign affairs told one local paper.
Haiti has been struggling to come back from a devastating earthquake last January that killed over 200,000 people and, at its peak, left 1.5 million homeless.
Oprah and Sean Penn Visit Haiti
Today, Oprah’s “Next Chapter” took her to tour the country of Haiti. With Sean Penn by her side, Oprah visited an encampment almost 2 years old that has become home for the Haitians displaced by the January 12, 2010 earthquake that shook the country to it’s core. Now, just one month shy of the two year anniversary, Oprah is shining light on efforts by Sean Penn and so many others that have created aid groups and more to help support people as they continue to try to rebuild their own lives. It’s reported that her journey with Sean and this visit will be featured on OWN, bringing to the rest of the world an update and understanding that only Oprah and her team know how to give us.
“This is part of the next chapter, going around the world to see interesting and fascinating cases of profound examples of what can be done to make a difference in the world,” Winfrey told reporters at the encampment. (AP quote)
Oprah’s Next Chapter is coming to OWN on January 1st, 2012. It is looking like a series that will open our eyes, our hearts and our minds to what is out in the world…one hour at a time.
